This chart will help you compare the CPU you find in your price range. It never hurts to have a reference.

When paired with a separate graphics card I'd pick the Core i3-6100. In many games it actually rivals or beats the AMD competition; AMD may offer more cores but Intel offer better ones. You also get a meaningful upgrade path to i5s and i7s. The FX-8320 is by no means a bad processor though and will do better in some games and applications. Both those can be overclocked with the right motherboard.

At that price range... I'd probably go for an Intel G3258 with a 1150 socket so I can upgrade to an i5 or i7 4790k. But that's just me, and I like to upgrade cheaply.
If you can save up another $30 and watch for sales, that can get you an FX 8350 or i5 4460. Modern games do like to have 4 cores...
Otherwise AMD's got some cheap quad or hex cores that give good performance that are well under $150 (like FX 4350 or FX 6350) but they are releasing their new AM4 socket later this year, so there would be nowhere to upgrade the CPU.

At $150 or less, the best you'll find are Core i3's (eg. i3-6300), or Pentium G3420.
On the AMD side, you'll find FX-8320, or A10-7870K, or Athlon X4 860K.
