I replaced a grounded wall outlet in a bathroom with a gfci outlet. Old outlet worked fine, tester says everything correct. New gfci outlet trips almost immediately when power turns on. I can put my tester in and before it trips i get correct lights. Power continues out recipticle to 1 light fixture which appears to be working fine. Any ideas how to figure out whats wrong? Put old outlet back in and thats working.

It does not take much to trip a GFCI. As this is in a bathroom all you want to protect is the outlet itself not the light or anything else downstream. If there are more than 1 set of wires in that outlet connect both sets to the LINE side of the GFCI outlet. That way the outlet itself will be protected but not whatever is downstream from the outlet. This will probably solve your problem. If there is only one pair of wires in the outlet then you have something else wrong. Call an electrician.

take another look at all the placement of the wires == a GFCI will not work if there are other things on that line-circuit ..... Usually the GFCI is on a dedicated circuit -- breaker to outlet -- and no light fixture ....
