Its better to be prepared. Change here in California before you enter Mexico. Most of the Casa de Cabio at San Ysidro or Calexico are opened 24 hours.
If driving, avoid changing at Pemex gas stations or toll booths, you will get ripped off, although not all of them do currency exchange.
If you have a Bank of America checking account, you could withdraw from a Santander Serfin ATM in Mexico without out of system fees. BofA & Santander have an agreement called the Global ATM Alliance.

Leave your money in your account. Use your ATM card in Mexico. You get the best rate of exchange and don't need to carry a wad of money on you.
