I`m scared of buzzers at basketball games, they shock me.... is it accepted in society?

I moved to USA a week ago (I`m from india), and apparently, basketball games here use buzzers. they shock me... is it accepted in society?

The buzzers at basketball games are definitely annoying and way too loud. You would think that in 2016 they could come up with something better.
