I know that to leave china you need a visa but do I a U.S. citizen need one in order to enter china? If so how hard is it to obtain one I d like to book my flight for may 18 the sooner I can book the flight the better.

In order to go to China, you will need a US Passport and most likely, a Chinese Visa.
You can get your visa from an agency such as MyChineseVisa or ChineseVisaExpress or JC Travel...you will need to fill out and print the forms (available on their sites) and then mail t hem, along with your pictures and passport, and they will process it and then mail your passport back with the visa stamped in it. Do not forget to include payment (less than $200). If you want to travel o May 18, I would do this immediately.

yes, you will need a visa i think to enter china. ask your local travel agent if they can organise it for you or if you can buy one at the entry point.
