Has anyone had to decide what to do with an artist's work after he has passed?

Our family's problem is whether to store all of it or just what to do.
We have a studio full of 75 years of oils and watercolors, sculptures and prints.
I was hoping to get an answer from someone who was in a similar postion but any advice or quesitions will be welcomed.

If the artist is well-known then a museum or gallery might be interested. Personally I would want my family to share out any pictures or sculptures to whoever wanted them and incinerate the rest.

EDIT:
A friend, who works with a charity that uses art for therapy, told me that she is organising a sale of a recently dead artist's work to support the charity, that might be an option.
