How to fix my central Ac?

I will try to explain this the best I can. I am a HVAC technician in Nevada. If the outdoor unit is not running first check for power. Make sure all the breakers are closed and supplying power to the unit. Be careful as there should be at least 240V AC to that outdoor unit. If there are fuses in the disconnect going to the outdoor unit check if the fuses are good. I would recommend getting a decent multi meter to check these things. If there is power to the unit and it is trying to start (you can hear the compressor hum or the fan hum like they're trying to start) then you more than likely have a bad capacitor. If the fan spins, but compressor hums, same thing, could be a bad start capacitor. If you have a tripped breaker, reset the breaker and see what happens. If it trips again then you more than likely have a faulty compressor causing a leak to ground and tripping the breaker. Capacitors are cheap and easy to change, if you need to change one, make sure the power is off to the unit and you discharge the capacitor first by laying a screw driver across all leads on top the the capacitor, and make sure you replace it with the same UF rating. Check the breaker in you breaker box could be tripped if you reset it an it trips again call hvac company you probably have a bad compressor. If breakers not tripped then turn unit on. Go out side see if you hear unit tring to start up. You can also take a stick or screw drive spin fan blade if fan starts running you got a bad capacitor. Cheap fix but id get hvac tech to do it.
