No telling what will happen with Free services. They may merge the emails or leave them separate, and give everyone a time limit the change to a new mail service under a new named mail product they offer, or a Verizon email account.
Over the years when this has happened to services like AOL, Prodigy, CompuServ, The Source, etc, the email services, were either spun off to new product names under other companies or whatever the old company morphed into or everyone was given a time limit to move their mail somewhere else.
And yes it is possible your email address can be used and sold to advertisers. Which means it is time to dust off the current version of the Yahoo TOS and actually read it and any changes that may or may not have been activated over the years or might be added as new terms are added after and before the ink is dry.

Yes. What will happen? Absolutely nothing will change in the short term. Core Yahoo! products will remain intact and Yahoo! very well may be operating as a subsidiary under Verizon which would mean little impact to current operations.

Yes Verizon is buying Yahoo. What happens is not known as of now. Possible nothing, just under new ownership
