How does Pokemon Go keep track of my location without wifi or data?

Question

I do not have a data plan on my phone, so I can only play Pokemon Go when I have wifi access...when I leave a wifi accessible area it still shows my character moving along streets and into buildings (though it does NOT show any Pokemon while I am traveling)...without data or wifi, how can the game track my movement?

GPS relies on public radio signals from satellites.

So if the map data is saved in the phone already it can work out your location on the map with no data connection.

GPS would be my guess. GPS uses no data or Wifi or anything, just sucks the life out of your battery.
