Do you need a US passport for a cruise out of Puerto Rico?

I'm looking at cruises and I live in North Carolina (US resident). There is a cruise that we are interested in but it departs out of San Juan, Puerto Rico and returns to San Juan. Let's say we fly from Charlotte, NC to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Take the"closed loop" cruise then fly back to Charlotte, NC after the cruise. Would you need a passport during any of this since Puerto Rico is a US territory? Anyone with knowledge or experience regarding this would be greatly appreciated! Will pick best answer.

You need to consult the cruise ship about this. At most stops, you may need an ID to reboard the ship, but not necessarily a passport. You don't need a passport to go to Puerto Rico. However, a passport makes things easier. Look on the cruise line's website to see what they require for check in or call and talk to an agent.
