I have noticed that on tv, all characters seem to shake hands with their left hand, from postman pat to adult characters. Why is this?

It's not. Most people are right handed, most shake right handed, definitely on TV. Maybe the perspective or angles are confusing you.

I think you're mistaken.  I had a pretty good look around, and all the cartoon character pics I could find used their right hands.  Maybe you have some examples I haven't seen?
