You could, but the Beatitudes are statements, not commandments. They also contradict much of the rest of the Bible. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. (Just before being tossed into the Lake of Fire, if they do not believe in Me.)"

Should we live by the beatitudes--

We sure ask heck should not live by the other inane part of the Sermon on the Mount - take no thought for the morrow, pluck out your eyes, etc.
