What is a good size for a prayer shawl (crochet/knitting)?

I'm starting to make prayer shawls for my church and am trying to make a rectangular one...I just want to know what the average size is.

On the bulletin it mentioned 3' X 4' but that seems like an odd size for a shawl...they also make lapghans and I am thinking that this size is for the lapghan and not the shawl...

Please if you have experience let me know what you think.

Prayer shawls can be any size or shape. 3x4' is not a bad size for a rectangular shawl, but it could also be square or a triangle or a circle (doubled). So make something pretty and usable, that's all they can ask (just not too small).
