It would be a small bright spot in the Heavens fading out over a few days to a few weeks. No one could be close enough to get a better description and still survive.

So why are you asking here? Nobody here has ever seen a supernova. Why don't you do some research and find accounts written by people in the past who actually DID see supernovas?

Well first of all you have to decide how far away the observer is. Someone who's on a planet orbiting the star will perceive the event very differently from someone who's in the next galaxy.
