I have a Pokémon card that says 'Platinum' across the picture. Does this do anything in the game, or does it make it any more valuable?

No it does not do anything in the game.
Cards with 'Platinum' written on the picture are from a set given away during a 2009 Burger King promotion. They are a set of 12 special holofoil reprints of cards released in the D&P Platinum era (Majestic Dawn, Legends Awakened, Great Encounters). You got two each time, along with a toy.
Because they are promo cards, they have a collectability that the originals might not have, however as they were mass produced, that could also make them less valuable than the equivalent from the TCG booster pack.

As you can see they can be purchased for not much at all, though probably a bit more than their original copies, at least for the commons and uncommons.
