How do I make progress with my therapist?

I've had 3 one-hour sessions with him and it seems like I'm just running in place. I kind of just babble on and so far the best advice I've gotten is "try to think about good things whenever you get down". He's in his 50s or early 60s, so I was thinking maybe a therapist in like his 30s would be more helpful. It's not his fault at all, but should I get another therapist? Part of me doesn't want to because I don't want to hurt his feelings, but if I could, how would I go about getting another one?

I can help. I haves severe Bipolar disorder with anxiety and panic and have been in therapy since 1990. Try to establish treatment goals. What to you want to accomplish in therapy. What would you like to work on. Ask your therapist and have some goals of your own. Once you do that you will make progress. I REALLY hope that helps you out. I have changed therapists before and none of them have taken it personally. They know that some patient/therapist relationships are not a good fit.

On the other hand, you could tell him that you are feeling stuck and maybe you two can figure out a way to redo the therapy into a method that is better for you.
