So I like arts and crafts so for Christmas and my birthday, relatives usually give me michaels gift cards but I don't really like that store. Can I buy stuff with my gift cards and then return them directly afterward for cash? Also is there an easier way to exchange a Michaels gift card for cash?

No...if you return something you bought with a gift card, you will get another store credit. That is the policy. See if someone you know will buy the card from you . Good luck.

If you're into arts & crafts, surely there are things you could buy at Michaels.
If it's Michaels itself you object to, or the one closest to you, you could perhaps use the gift cards at michaels.com.
Then several times before the Christmas season, you could make a point of telling the ones who normally give you Michaels cards how much you love this other place where you now buy all your craft supplies (local or online places). You could even go so far as saying something like "they also have gift cards, available at the store and/or online" so they'd know how to buy them for you without having to figure out that part themselves.

Shops are aware of that scam and would only refund with a gift card or store credit. Ask your friends who shop there to give you cash for the gift card.

you can probably buy items and return them BUT you will need to see what their return policy is ( probably on their website ).............there are sites where you can sell your cards - do a google search
