What would happen if I drove a vehicle with no tags or registration?

Have a truck I bought, have tried every avenue to get it titled. Can't, has what was called an open title. Dude I bought it from is being a wrench about things, and is not answering any communications from me. Almost every gov't agency is telling me I will have to get a court order, etc, to get the title. I have the original title, the bill of sale notarized from the guy I bought it from, insurance, state inspection done by county sheriffs, everything except tags and registration. Figured if all that would happen is a ticket, I'd take my chances going to court and pray a judge likes me and my face enough to help me get this mess straightened out.

See if a " bonded title" is an option for you. Costs a few bucks, but if uncontested reverts to regular in 3 years.

A large fine ($500 to $2000) for sure. Probably also a suspended drivers license for 3-12 months, The vehicle will get towed ($$) and might even get impounded because you won't be allowed to drive it away from the place you get stopped by police. Jail time is even possible if you get into an accident and injure someone or if you have been in trouble with the law previously. So go ahead and drive it, dumbass, especially if you'd like your life to take a major nosedive.

Technically, you haven't bought it. Buying consists of (1) paying and (2) getting a perfect title that isn't an "open" title and can be used to register it. Paying is the less important of these two things. Giving someone money and getting an "open title" is basically the same as just giving someone money, as a gift, and not getting anything.
