What would be your perfect historical army?

If you could command a sizeable force of ground troops, what would you arm/fit them with? How would you position them? What is your plan of attack?

For the sake of argument, let's lay some ground rules:

-Time period is any military tech prior to the year 1650 A.D.

-No major artillery such as trebuchets, cannons, ballistas, catapults, etc.

-Due to mostly emphasis on melee combat matchlock and wheelocks are only acceptable firearms.

-Obviously this is meant to be historically based. No fictious characters or military. Especially Sci-Fi.

My army would be divided into Greek phalanxes and comprised of two kinds of soldiers. The first would be troopers armed with sarissas (20' spears) and kopis and fitted with medium-light lamellar with mail, light buckler and barbuta helmets for protection against arrows and wide field of vision. The second troopers would simply be armed with Hispaniensis gladius swords. Their armor would be medium-heavy with a cuirass and mail and visored barbuta helmets. The first troopers would move as a single unit, using their coordination and layered sarissas to keep enemies from getting close. Their armor should protect against arrow volleys. The second troopers moves along both sides and rear of the phalanx, since that is where protection is needed most from flanking enemies. The heavy shields and armor will protect from heavy weapons trying to break lines and their gladius' will make short work of charging footsoldiers until the sarissas can get into position, keeping everyone moving as a unit.
