How do I tell a coworker to stop complaining?

He sits right next to me in a cubicle so I can t avoid him. We both had to work on the same spreadsheet and I finished my part. He has complained nonstop about his share of the work for days, complained to our boss, then sat at his desk and complained some more. It is driving me bat crazy. How do I tell him to knock it off without sounding nasty?

I was stuck with someone who always complained at work. Like you, I had it with the constant negative comments. One morning, I said to my co worker "I do not think you realize how much you complain. Today I am going to count out loud each time you complain so you are aware of the frequency in which you do so."

Then, I began counting...."That is number 1 complaint today"...."That's number two"...."That's number three"....and so on.
This was a verbal reminder of the number of complaints I was subjected to and by lunch time, the number reached a whopping 17 complaints. Not even I realized it had gotten that bad, but that was the typical day. Well, I guess I made my point, because the co worker stopped complaining, out loud, at least. Yippiee!!

Tell him by giving him the impression that you're helping him. Say to him conspiratorially, "Dude, I would seriously suggest you tone down the complaints about the level of work. You could easily give management the wrong impression, and if they think you're a slacker, that's not going to sit well, ya know?"

you tell him he´s being totally unprofessional , he needs to do his job without interfering with production , and get the job done , if he continues to complain your complaining to the boss , good luck
