There are the classics that have been in print for decades. Sherlock Holmes books or The Car in the Hat or The Handmaid's Tale or The Thorn Birds.
There are the new books in various genres. Those are in the bookstores and the library. Every reader has his or her tastes in fiction. Think of what you like to read about when you browse the shelves. Pick up a few and read the book jacket blurbs or the first page. If it grabs your interest, it is probably a book you will like reading.
I've heard that Terry Pratchett's Discworld series is interesting but I prefer Terry Jones' books about the Middle Ages.
