Should I participate in the National School Walkout in honor of the Parkland victims and protest of our government's lack of gun reform?

A bunch of kids at my school have started a Facebook group for ppl who want to participate in a National School Walkout next week. I'm not sure if I should do it. I want to honor those who were hurt in the tragedy as well as push for some sort of gun reform change. But, I am afraid that I will get in trouble with my school. Our school has recently upped safety standards and the principal expressed his opposition towards the protest. Any disciplinary action against me would go on my permanent record and hurt my chances of college acceptance in the future. Some universities have said that the protest would not affect admission. This only means that some universities feel the exact opposite. I am looking for genuine answers (not political promoters who troll online to start arguments) Thank you

If anyone proposed something that would actually work,  I would be all for it.   But all they propose are things that are "feel good" measures.   And they all avoid the question,  if a guy is a nut case and he can not get his hands on guns,  what is to stop the guy from driving his car down the sidewalk or making a gasoline bomb?    IMHO we need to focus on identifying these people before they go nuts.

I would not participate in it if your future could be jeopardised. Perhaps there is another way you could show support, with a t-shirt or something. 
I would go to the teachers and principal, talk about the walkout, and ask if they would support a symbolic walkout at some time in the day for half an hour instead, followed by a return to class. That way you can all show support, but if you get the teachers and principal on side, everyone wins.
