Simple questions. It has 48,000 miles and has never been modded or retuned. How long can I expect this car to last me in terms of miles? I drive about 6500 a year. Are the rumors about BMW life expectancy true or overblown? I've heard people say "Oh I took mine to 4 million miles (exaggerating)" and others say "every 2 feet the engine blew up (still exaggerating)." Also, the cost of ownership; are oil changes a nightmare cost, tires, etc, etc?

Service it on time, don't abuse it and it'll last you till you retire. Assuming your annual mileage doesn't change it'll take you just over 8 years to get it round the clock. Then another 15+ years to do another lap. That's 23 years ownership. I guess you'll be wanting a Corolla long before then.
Hi so till recently BMW had a good reliability record. however they are now not built to last since 2010. they are designed like any other production car so 7 years or 100k miles is where the warranty finishes. for good reason that is when parts start to fail. along with the same high end labour charges at the dealer. so these are the parameters to work with in so regular servicing and repairs and time to sell it or part exchange it next year.
if any vehicle is properly maintained, then it will "last longer" then one not taken care of....as for the # of years or mileage - there's no guarantees; brand new vehicles can have a faulty engine or whatnot...........I has an Isuzu truck that I traded in for a newer one; the trade in had over 500000 miles on the original drive train
