Swimming does the most complete overall body workout, but not everyone has access to a pool every day. Walking is a great start at getting in shape as it tones the lower body, and builds the butt and leg muscles, big fat burners. I have been walking intensively since April and have lost nearly 30 pounds and pant size dropped from about 40 inches to 34 and shirt size from large to medium. Plus I look and feel great.

The Army recently changed their physical test from 1950s school yard calisthenics to something that would more directly test the physical skills one might need in the field. Sit ups don't tell me if you can pull your *** and full pack onto a big *** truck. Deadlifts and a heavy ball throw do.

You need all of that to get in shape. (Although you don't need so much redundancy; treadmill, running, walking, etc. Just go for a jog, don't be a cardio bunny unless the treadmill makes electricity for the building. Yes, that's a thing). Resistance, cardio, and stabilization are the triangle of being fit. That can be covered by weights, running, and yoga. Or power-lifting, cycling, and Pilates. Or bands/bodyweight, swimming, and whatever the guy who balances on a Bosen ball while juggling dumbbells thinks he's doing. Or any other combination that fits you.

A lot depends on your current physical condition, health, and age. The best exercise is swimming. It exercises literally every muscle in the body and it's super low impact. Of course swimming requires clean warm water without crockagators in the water. Walking is a very natural form of exercise and it's an exercise you can do your entire life, with very low logistical requirements.
