Most people have a specific style, but they do not know what it is. But, everyone knows what they do no like. With my clients, I can systematically determine what they do like by listening carefully to what they do not like. Through the process of elimination, I can always figure out which decorating direction to go in. With that, I ask questions about where they like to vacation, which season is their favorite. Sometimes I can tell a lot about a person's decorating style by the way they dress.

I met a woman who could not tell me what she liked in home décor, but she knew what she did not like. She did not like fluff and ruffles or fussy décor. I noticed she wore a white tailored shirt with tan slacks and loafers that matched her belt. I suggested neutral colors in fabrics and wall color, roman shades and solid colored pillows...tailored and streamlined. She was shocked that I "knew" what she wanted.

My point is that people can decorate on their own, if they take the time to look at images and pick out what they like and implement that into their décor.

I like to go with mostly neutral pieces of furniture and then add the pop in the colors of the drapery, pillows and other accessories. This way, you can always keep your furniture and rugs as is and simply change a few accessories or fabric elements for a totally different look.

My friends think I redecorate all the time, when in fact, I simply change the accessories for different look when the seasons change. Keeping the same pillow forms, I just switch out the covers. This simple decorating technique allows fresh changes while preserving what you have because you are not using it day in and day out, year after year.

I love Benjamin Moore's color: Cream Yellow. This is not a sunshine or brassy yellow, it is very light yellow that blends with every color I have mixed with it thus far. So, starting with a base color that has lots of possibilities is key. Then, find yourself some inspiration. Inspiration can be had from any object from a vase, a throw rug, a work of art, a decorative pillow, a throw blanket, an upholstered chair or ottoman. But something you absolutely love and then use those colors when selecting other items.

You may want to begin with buying the furniture you love first. From there, this is where you stylize the room with fabrics and accessories, lighting and art work.

It is best to measure out a room on graph paper with all of the openings and windows placed to scale. Use graph paper in the ratio of one square to one foot. You can cut out pieces of furniture to scale and move the paper furniture around the graph paper until you get the layout you want. This room graph is ideal when figuring if a certain piece of furniture will fit where you want to place it, or not. So, bring it with you when you go furniture shopping. You can also go to BHG.com and use their virtual arrange-a-room tool where you create the size of your room and can customize furniture sizes to drag into the room to create a floor plan. Love this tool, but I also like a hands-on graph paper floor plan as well.

Buy what you love because you love it, not only because it is a great sale or closeout price. You will then be stuck with something you are iffy about long after the savings are had.

Also, stop asking the opinions of your family and friends because when you ask, they give your THEIR taste in opinions. Therefore, you need to rely on what YOU like because you are the one to live with it.
I spent five hours helping a client pick her paint colors for the interior of her home. That weekend, her mother-in-law poo-pooed some of her color choices and "helped" her pick out new colors. The client hired a painter and after the whole house was painted, she disliked the results because it reminded her of her mother-in-law's house, NOT the vision we had picked together. So, guess what? She had those rooms repainted with the colors we originally selected.

The rule of thumb is if you second guess any of your choices, then move on to consider another decision. Sometimes you just have to buy things, bring them home and live with them for a couple of days to decide if you like it. I once filled the back seat of my car with tons of pillows and accessories from PierOne and HomeGoods, just to see them in the room before any final choices were made. You may hate something when you get it home or love something you tried on a whim. Return all unwanted merchandise to get your money back and repeat, if necessary.

You either have to have excellent taste or no interest at all in it, and the money to fund it.
