What happens if you go AWOL from the Army National Guard?

AWOL only applies if you were called up to active duty. If you just do not show up at drills you will not get sufficient points for the year to count as a good year towards retirement. You are still subject to a call up for deployment and if you missed the drills you will not be well trained to do your job. If you have several "bad years" where you did not show up for training they will discharge you and give you an RE3 code. If they really wanted to nail you, they could call you up for active duty and when you do not show up after three days, they could put you down as AWOL and after 30 days they put you down as a deserter. That will look really good on your record.

So you haven't been showing up for drill?

I know a guy, they waited till his last year of college and tried to arrest him during finals week.

You'll probably be sentenced to clean the latrines every day you're on duty. With your toothbrush.

That's what I'd have you do, anyway.

Non Judicial Punishment or worse. Depending on the circumstances the punishment differs. They haven's shot any one for this for a long time, but it is still a possibility.
