I remember reading a story that in order to get a bonus for hitting 300 with the Mets in '65, he paid the pitcher $50 for grooving one right down broadway on the last at bat of the year. He singled and finished at .302. Who were the Mets playing and who was the pitcher? Anyone else hear that story?

Davis missed all but 17 games of the 1965 season after breaking his ankle while sliding into 2nd base. He hit .250 that year.
In his only season with the Mets (1967) he did hit .302 despite ending the season with just one hit in his last 23 at bats. That hit was a double off of former teammate Don Drysdale in the last game of the season. He entered that game hitting .301.

You must have heard wrong. Tommy Davis was still playing for the Dodgers in 1965 and hit a very mundane .250.
Edit: Davis hit .302 in 1967 for the Mets, and checking the box score he went 1 for 3 against Hall of Famer Don Drysdale of the Dodgers. Davis had a double (no single) in his second at bat and grounded out in his final at bat of the season.
And no, Drysdale couldn't have been bought for $50.00.
