CV axle won t go all the way in?
To clarify, the car is a 1985 Camry. The axle split apart in the center while driving at speed, and in doing the portion of the shaft that fits inside of the transmission popped out about an inch and a half. It is still connected to the transmission and spins with the gears, but has broken the seal with the transmission because it will not go in all the way. People have told me that this is due to a c ring, but on this cv axle there is no c ring, nor any groove in the axle where one should be (and this is the original axle as well). Yes, I know what the c ring is supposed to look like. I just changed a cv axle on my 93 corolla the other day. No, there is definitely no c ring or place where the ring should be. I have tried forcing the axle into the transmission with a mallet, a sledgehammer, and compressing it into place with a jack but it does not budge. It makes a solid clunk as it slides in, but will not go in the extra inch and a half or so. What could this be, and how to fix? Anyone have experience with an axle like this? Bad idea to cut off the end of the spline so it fits?
