The metric system is arbitrary. A meter is defined as one ten millionth of the distance between the equator and the poles. Why on earth do we need to compare a relatively tiny object like a person to that massive distance in order to know how tall they are??

The others are correct about more accuracy, ease of changing units by a factor of ten, and doing interchangeable units between distance, mass, volume, and force.
But the metric conversion for the last 180 years could only go so far. Time has been the big holdout. Way back a French gentleman tried to put in place metric time. 100 second minute (each second about 86.4% as long as now), the 100 minute hour, and the 10 hour day. Weeks would still be 7 days (those darned Catholics and their Sundays!), months about the same, year is the same. But the effort failed. Too many watches and clocks the people had spent a lot of money on--different from throwing out yardsticks, I guess.

The idea is you have a standard that everyone can go check out for themselves. However the standard for a meter is now based upon the speed of light. As far as it being arbitrary, all measuring systems are.

How about the width of the hand,,,say you are 15 hands tall.
Using a tank of waster with a pin hole to tell time,,,well it is 6 liters past noon.
It works, it is just something accepted long ago as being a standard, something everyone agrees on. Just not globally as in the SAE standard, your meter is near our yard. Our mile is 1,609 of your kilometers.
The scientific community has much adopted the metric system as standard, it is a good system.
It is convenient working with base 10 numbers, going from kilometer down to micrometer,
Taking a mile down to an inch takes a more complicated math, numbers other than 10.

Scale is irrelevant. The metric system is used for measuring the wavelength of x-rays, in the nanometers, all the way up to galaxies. The size of the earth is somewhere in the middle. All the math and geometry is the same, just a different number of zeros.
Consider that we all measure time based on the vibrations of the cesium atom. The time of one vibration of a cesium atom is 0.0000000000878 seconds. (1.0878e-10) Even centuries are timed based on these infinitesimal units!
