I have a friend who is convience store clerk. If a customer physically assaulted him, and he fought back, could he lose his job? Can you defend yourself and still be employed by them?

It all depends on the store owner or manager. Some would be fine with you defending yourself and others would not. It's just a matter of luck.

He could lose his job for wearing red socks. He could lose his job because the boss had too much sugar in her coffee. And of course he could lose his job for fighting back.
