Is my "friend" really my friend? He texts me constantly but we never hang out except in "forced" settings.?

Almost every day he texts me "What's up?" Then we text about random stuff like girls and whatnot.

However the only time we hang out is when other people are having a party or whatever and we are both invited. And we both went on a camping trip with mutual friends but didn't even sleep in the same tent. I haven't even been to his house except to drop him off. But now its been months since I have seen him in person yet we still text all the time. I even invited him bowling once and he said he couldn't go.

Do you think he's a real friend?

I'm not sure how long you guys have been friends for.. but you guys sound either like mutual's, or just someone you hang out with occasionally at school or work. I feel like he thinks of you as a friend because he texts you everyday, but about you guys hanging out, if you want to hang out with him more let him know. You have to tell him how you're actually feeling instead of letting the problem explode. About the bowling thing, he probably couldn't go because he was busy, that's understandable. I've had plenty of school friends before, and I've only ever hung out with them at school and texted them when I was home but that was it. Even so, we were still friends and we still considered each other as friends. As long as you feel like you have a connection with him or you feel good with him, then I wouldn't be so quick to jump the gun. Best of luck to you! :)
