My neighbor spanks their dog?

It doesn't look abusive, but it looks like how a parent would smack their kid on the butt. Is this okay?

Absolutely, as long as it’s not abuse it’s fine. Dogs aren’t as smart as humans, and they need to learn what they can and can’t do and sometimes that requires a smack here and there. Just telling your dog that tearing up a couch or your lawn is “bad” and “don’t do that, no” isn’t going to teach them that they can’t do that again.

Call the police for animal abuse.

It depends on what the dog is doing and how hard your neighbor is hitting, in my opinion. My neighbor in MD had a husky and if they were playing with her and she got too rough they would (pretty gently) smack her on the muzzle. If you're concerned, you can contact authorities and see what they think.

Yes. I regularly spank my basset hound puppy. He's a bad boy! Very bad boy!!!

This is based on a matter of opinion. It is their dog and unless they are really beating the animal nothing much will be done. If it's a light tap, it may be one of those things you have to let slide.

Do I agree with it? No. It's a sign that someone does not understand how to correctly train a dog using dog communication. Is there a better way? Yup. But most don't bother to learn it.
