Why for an individual or why for human life or why for life itself on this planet? There are a variety of religions created to offer explanations, but for each you have to believe its basis. I've been an atheist these past few years and readily accept "We don't know yet." as opposed to created answers. There is an interesting speculation and some scientific backing of a universe consciousness where one possibility is that consciousness exists and we are just discovering its extent. On that basis, we exist because the universe willed it to be. There is no deity to worship and the books of religion are just to teach morality and ethics that societies have as part of coexisting.
Certainly, morality and ethics even predate modern religions.
A consciousness of the universe is called Panpsychism. It is certainly not proven, but bits of experimentation and evidence that are repeatable puts it a step above religions.

The Star Wars religion, Jediism, speculates a force in the universe to be tapped, and Panpsychism would consider it a branch. The concept of God then would involve taking panpsychism and calling it an entity.

He claims that awareness is not something within a body or mind, but instead exists separately from life and is "tapped" by life.
Maybe one day we'll have a clear answer. For now, feel free to learn about what MAY be the answer, or maybe not as we may get to another level of knowledge. We learn more, and then create a new model of explanation.
