Why isn't the website accepting my email address?

I'm trying to create an account for a certain website. Part of the process is to put in my email address, but every time I put it in, a message pops up that says, "Enter your email address". It's not accepting it even though it's an active email address. Why is this happening and how can I fix the problem?
