Megadeth. Overall, they have a much, much stronger catalogue and they have exemplified better musicianship and consistency over the course of their career.
"Killing is My Business" wasn't a great debut. The songs were fairly solid, but they were immature, the production was tinny and the record was too campy to be taken seriously.
"Peace Sells" was the first record where they really showed what they could do and it's just a great album.
"So Far" might be a bit all over the place for some people. They were all going through a lot at the time, but personally, I've always loved the dark, grim tone of the album and I think it's a very strong album musically.
"Rust in Peace" is arguably the greatest thrash metal record ever released. It's practically perfect. Great songs, great production, it's got direction, it's got energy, it's got bite, from beginning to end, it's just wonderful.
"Countdown to Extinction" marked the end of the classic era of the band. It wasn't as heavy hitting as "Rust in Peace", but it's probably a more perfectly streamlined record. It's got punch and style and it's packed with stellar riffs and hooks.
After that, they released a few decent records and a few sub-par ones. Their next highlight would be "Endgame" which was so good that I think everybody was shocked by just how good it was.
I would say that the low point for Megadeth has been their post-Youthanasia albums, particularly "Super Collider", but even though they've been average by the standards they set for themselves for the past 20 odd years with the exception of "Endgame", they are still delivering music that's superior to a lot of what other bands are doing.
Mustaine completely destroys Hetfield in terms of guitar playing. It's not even a contest. If Hetfield had 1,000 lifetimes he'd never, ever be on Mustaine's level. or even close to it.
Marty Friedman is light years ahead of Kirk Hammett. Hammett is one of the sloppiest, most boring, most unoriginal, unimaginative and pedestrian players in the scene. The lead work in bands like Megadeth, Exodus and Testament is far, far better than anything Hammett and his prissy little whammy fixation have been able to offer up. Hammett is a shite rhythm player, he's a one-trick pony, he makes heaps of mistakes, his tone is awful and he's just a very average player in every way. Friedman is infinitely better.
Cliff Burton was a very talented bassist and composer and was far better than Ellefson, but Mustaine IS and has always BEEN Megadeth, so it doesn't matter.
Favourite Megadeth record: Easily "Rust in Peace."
Favourite songs: "Lucretia", "Tornado of Souls", "Holy Wars."
Favourite Metallica record: Probably "Kill 'Em All", but "Master of Puppets" is definitely their best.
Favourite songs: "Jump in the Fire", "Master of Puppets", "Orion."
