God is a just God, and as such, His justice demands there be punishment for crimes committed. If someone killed your family, and came before a judge who let the murderer off free, what would you think of that judge? So God Himself paid the price for your sins/crimes, and mine, undergoing a most horrible and painful death imaginable.

God could have saved us any way He chose. But He wanted to clearly emphasize both the horror of sin, and His infinite love for us.

The crucifixion didn't save anyone from their sins. It gave us the option of repenting of our sins and receiving salvation.

In the story, the all-powerful god was powerless to forgive or choose any other method than human sacrifice.
