What kind of flower is this?

Question

I’ve only seen it a couple of times on my property in south east Virginia. It usually pops up around this time of year. This one I’ve seen for the past three or four weeks, and it is probably seven or eight inches tall.

That is Aquilegia vulgaris, or common columbine. They are lovely flowers, great for naturalizing in the wildflower garden. They look very nice paired up with larkspur. One of my favorite wildflowers but unfortunately, very few columbines can thrive in my area. One that does well is Hinckley's columbine, which is native to Texas. That one is yellow, and there are garden cultivars sold as 'Texas Gold' columbines. It looks beautiful with blue or purple native larkspur.

It seems to be an aquilegia. They come in a variety of colours and varieties. We currently have some like yours but with purple in the middle and white/pale blue on the outside.
