Why did Batiatus keep Spartacus alive after he lost to Crixus for the first time?

Why would he kill him?  He'd paid good money for Spartacus and wanted to make a profit off of him.  His loss to Crixus was disappointing, and it damaged his prestige in the arena, but he could still make money from Spartacus via the underground pit fights.
