Look up "fear" in the dictionary, and you will see that one of the definitions is "profound reverence and awe". That's the definition that is being used when the Bible speaks of "fear of the Lord".

It is the fear of sin that God gives.

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

Deuteronomy 6:24 KJV — And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.

Ecclesiastes 8:12 KJV — Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 KJV — Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

NEW TESTAMENT....

If I were not an atheist, I would probably be terrified of it. It promises to hurl people into a hot fiery pit of eternal loving suffering.
