Can watermelon rind pickles work without peeling ?

I’ve been wanting to make refrigerator pickles with watermelon rind using cinnamon candy. I just got done cutting up a watermelon, then cut up the rind. One mistake, I forgot to peel it. I’ve always made refrigerator pickles from cucumbers and zucchini without peeling. Will they still work ok if I leave the skin on?

Watermelon rind is a lot tougher than cucumbers & zucchini, so its harder to digest.
