My son asked me to make him a rustic looking walnut desktop and he wants these legs mounted on it. The wood is only 3:4” thick and I’m not sure how to mount the legs so they will be secure? I was thinking of routing out an rare exactly the size of each legs screw bar and same depth of the top bar then using wide short wood screws with wood glue or epoxy to hold them in place ? Would this work or do you have any other ideas?

YES -- you need to reinforce that top unless it is much better quality wood than we usually see these days. Someday, the desk will be stood on. And that when it is loaded with gear, some of it heavy. Save your son some grief ... reinforce the top with 3/4 inch plywood NOW. After that, 1 1/4 inch number 10 or 12 screws will likely work fine.

I would glue solid timber an inch thick to the top over the leg supports, and screw into that - which sounds like what you are suggesting. You won't see the fixings unless you are on the floor. Permanently gluing the legs on may make it difficult to move. 3/4 inch is relatively thin for a desk top (I use 1"), so I would consider sticking a second sheet to span across the fixing area of both legs to stiffen the top, and fix into that (and add a few hooks to loop up cables).
