Where does the sound of tinnitus come from?

How can we hear inside our head that is not coming from any external sound. Is there any theories about why tinnitus really occurs and how the brain interprets sounds?

It is thought that broken hair cells in the inner ear send false signals to the brain which interprets them as the sound you hear. Anything that affects the nerves and hearing part of the brain can generate random noise, so too can various diseases and conditions.

Don't know about the source, but I know from personal experience it is real, and listening to Brown Noise really helps - get mine on Youtube.
