I’ve heard that this might be a neighborhood where a gang lives. Is that true or not?
I am looking to move to Chicago and I have seen some nice apartments in this area.
Any recommendations or thoughts would be highly appreciated.

There are gang activities all over the city, not just on the South & West Sides.
Uptown is, generally, safer than most of the neighborhoods in $hitcago, but always be on the lookout.
Based on 2017 CPD Gang Database (and according to my best friend, who was a Tactical Officer for CPD at the 19th District on Addison & Fremont), there are 4 major gangs in the Uptown area:
- Conservative Vice Lords & 4 Corner Hustlers are around Clarendon & Wilson and Clarendon & Montrose.
- Black P. Stones are west of Broadway.
- Gangster Disciples are around Sheridan & Lawrence to Sheridan & Wilson; additionally, they are also around south of Broadway & Wilson.
And in the summer, be careful when you are going to Montrose Beach/Harbor, because gangbangers from other areas may be hanging out around there and they may get into a shoot out with the rival gangs like what happened in the summer of 2017.
Btw, in 2018, ACLU filed a federal lawsuit against the city & CPD that sought to have the gang database deemed unconstitutional. The lawsuit is still pending.

The crime rate in parts of Uptown is higher than I would tolerate, but it is not as bad as in the 'hood. There are gangs and violence does occur. It is generally safe in the high-rise apartments that line the lakefront - but the streets to the west are sketchy.
