You are not the only one who has felt that way, but we get over it with the old adage that 'a stitch in time saves nine', and by thinking about it. If a trip to the dentist was really so bad, they'd never keep their customers!  They are so much better now at handling pain. Even back in the day the sting of the anaesthetic needle in the gum was quickly gone (like 10-15 seconds). Why? Well it's an anaesthetic. If you don't believe them when they say you are not cleaning your teeth well enough, just ask them to paint some temporary disclosing fluid on and then you can look in the mirror and see where you're doing it wrong.
Extremely anxious people can discuss various types of sedation, but that can mean you can't do much for the rest of the day.

My mom is TERRIFIED, but what got her through was a "must needs" attitude. Put it off today, much more dental work to do in the future, so in other words:  A little cavity that can be filled right now will turn into a rotted tooth later, and will need more work on it than just sucking it up and getting it taken care of NOW.

Also, they are there to help and make sure your teeth are clean and good and nothing wrong. They are HELPING YOU, not hurting you. You need to put on your big kid pants and handle it.
