Two identical conducting spheres are placed
with their centers 0.21 m apart. One is given
a charge of +1.2 × 10−8 C and the other a
charge of −1.6 × 10−8 C.
Find the magnitude of the electric force
exerted by one sphere on the other.
The value of the Coulomb constant is
8.98755 × 109 N · m2
/C

1) F = kQq / d²
F = 8.98755e9N·m²/C² * 1.2e-8C * 1.6e-8C / (0.21m)²
F = 3.9e-5 N

2) After connecting, the charge on each is
Q = ½*(1.2e-8 - 1.6e-8)C = -2.0e-9 C
and so F = 8.98755e9N·m²/C² * (-2.0e-9C)² / (0.21m)²
F = 8.15e-7 N ≈ 8.2e-7 N (two significant digits)

Hope this helps!
