R&P- If you were recommending your fave band- what one song would you select to show in a nutshell the qualities you like about them?
I thought this would be hard, and I tested answering this myself. I found that there is a lot to consider.
The most important thing is a short description (or long) of your thinking in selecting the song.
Thank you for the one or two serious answers I am expecting.

The band would be The Beatles, & the song might well be "Yes It Is", the "B" side of the "Ticket To Ride" single of April 1965. It highlighted the superb vocals of the band, the poignant lyrics, & the innovative instrumentation that they presented in whole or part on almost every track they recorded. Another possibility might be "I've Got A Feeling", from the "Let It Be" album, & for the same reasons.
Your talking about converting people missionary style. It depends on the person and how well you know them. New Order are my Beatles so this Xmas we had a family gathering and my 11 year old nephew got himself a new smartphone(any song ever written in the palm of your hand) he's in to Football(soccer) and Vampires so got him to play 'World in Motion'(official England song Italia 90') and 'Confusion' from the 'Blade' films.
Back in 85' 15 year old me used to sit in my room blasting out New Order, Mum used to say it was a racket and weird music. So I played her 'Love Vigilantes' a song about a soldier returning from WW2 to see his wife and Child again but dying anyway and she related it to her own Dad/my Grandad. From then on she tolerated it and gave me begrudging respect she also liked 'The Sweet Cheat Gone' for the piano playing.
I'm all into W O L F C L U B these days. This song is pretty much in a nutshell what I really like about them. It's electronic with a nice beat, great bass line and beautiful playful synthy "scales" (not sure what to call them), melodic and quite repetative, just the way I love it. =)

A funny thing Brother Livin', Rock Lobster sent me this. I can only catch a word once in a while. In Spanish, and I only understand elementary level Spanish. I do find it odd, being drawn to this. Early on in the album it sets up a comfortable feel. A nice texture. I am told by a Spanish speaking girl my problem understanding may be also that Lula sings with an accent. Can you believe it ARGENTINA ? Who knew. A very good band tremendous show. I also have the DVD of this album played live. I do not have a favorite band I listen to so many I consider outstanding. This is one of my favorite albums to hear. Most enjoyable ! I would love to know what your answer and description/explanation would be. You are sooo much better with words than I am. (And I really miss the comments. I wish Yahoo would bring it back as an option to allow comments for each answer the way they allow you to make each answer anonymous if you want to.)
I think you already know my favorite band is Metric ;-)
I've actually thought about this before, and it's very difficult for me to narrow it down even to five songs. They have so much variety in their discography that it's pretty much impossible to show everything I love about them with just one of their songs.
That being said, I just skimmed through their songs, and I've finally selected one that I think best represents them and my love for them.

The instruments kick a** in true Metric fashion. Vocally, she does some fun stuff that really showcases her stellar voice as well as its diversity/range. Lyrically, it's intelligent, thoughtful, fun, and feisty.
