Was this stupid ?

Today at an online bible study a lady said: " I've been married since '86 and struggling with domestic violence from then until around 2001 or 2002. We shouldn't give up easily in marriage. Jesus said forgive 70 x 70 and to keep faith...."

I understand the verse but what the hell??? Am I the only one think this was stupid??

It's understandable that you think it's stupid.  You probably aren't the only one.  But women who stay in a marriage with domestic violence should not be judged one way or the other.  They have their reasons and those reasons are not necessarily scriptural. We don't have the whole picture.  We don't even have half the picture.  And even if we did, we still can't judge. They have a right to stay or leave.  As for forgiving up to 77 times according to Matthew 18:22, I think the lady is misapplying it.

I forgot to say:  some abusers actually stop the abuse.  I have seen it personally with some men.  They never do it again.  I've seen some female abusers stop abusing their husbands too.  It happens.

We all have the power to get out of a bad situation if we just trust in our own strength. Waiting around for something to happen to fix the situation is foolish at best.

You neglected to say what steps you have taken to improve your marriage. Some counseling perhaps? Some spiritual guidance?  People who are suffering from a condition either do something about it, or spend the rest of their life complaining about it.

Friend forgiveness does not involve allowing ongoing abuse! It involves restitution if the person is genuinely repentant. If the person is not repentant and is using your Christian values to set a trap for you to stalk you it's time to fight back. you call the law and you get self defense devices they don't have to be lethal just enough to disable the person so that the law can pick him up

She took that verse out of context.  She should get away from him.  She can forgive from a position of safety away from him and divorced from him.  As for heaven and hell, Death leads to immediate heaven or hell, and it is too late to be saved, after death.  To be in heaven and not hell, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is God and who died on the cross and shed His blood to pay for all of our sins in full, and who was buried, and who resurrected from the dead.  The only way to avoid hell is by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, without adding any of your own works.  See Romans 4:5, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, and John 3:16.
