Do you need PS Plus to play games?

I'm new to the PlayStation console's and I've noticed behind a lot of game cases there's "Playstation Plus Required to play" Do you really need that? Isn't that something you pay for? If so why? I'm too used to playing for what I purchase.. But I've noticed things changed. So I have to pay $ like a monthly subscription?

I know what you mean. Sony sucks, as does Microsoft. We shouldn't need to pay a subscription to play. They claim its for better quality servers, but its just a way to loot money from players. You would have to ask on a game by game basis to know what functionality non ps- subscribers would have. As noted in a previous answer, offline gaming usually works. In the case of. Destiny 2, you can play online without sub, but you lose matchmaking abilities.

If the games have online functionality it will usually require a PS+ membership in order to access them.

PS3 had free online play but PS4 and PS5 require the subscription.

If you don't want to access online functionality and just want to play the single-player modes (if there are any, some games don't) then you can play those modes without a subscription.

It costs $60 for an annual subscription. I think you can pay quarterly or monthly as well but it will cost more over time doing it that way vs. paying up front for a year.
