Do I need any kind of protection windows 10?

I was told it comes with Windows Defender. so do I need anything like malaware? I assume not as it will not let me download it anyway as it is in S mode. So am I safe not adding to what ever came with the laptop? Thanks

Defender is NOT an antivirus. it is a temporary protection until you get an antivirus.
and you can disable S mode. it is useless:

Theoretically S Mode is enough simply because you can't download anything outside of the Microsoft Store similar to how it works on iPhone or iPad.

I would probably at least get an ad blocking extension for Edge like Ublock Origin and you'll be relatively safe as long as you don't visit any suspicious websites.

Windows 10 comes with it's own Anti Virus Program and in the new versions of Windows 10 it is called Windows Security.  Defender was the old name.
I use Windows 10 Pro and I also use Malwarebytes as it works well with Windows Security.
If you can get Malwarebytes from the Microsoft Store with Windows 10 S then do so.
There is also a procedure to change from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Home.
