What generation processors are compatible with an i5 to upgrade to?

My laptop was offered with the option of an i5 or i7. What generations of processors are all compatible with it?

I should clarify on this, the laptop is a Dell Latitude E6520. People saying it’s soldered in is incorrect, it’s just as removable as a desktop processor. These computers were made to easily take apart and replace parts, in fact, during the warranty, there were times they sent me the part to replace instead of sending a tech to my house.

Since it is a laptop, the processor is going to be build into the system board and you can not change or upgrade it.  Whatever processor you buy is what you are stuck with for the life of the laptop.

Two problems with this question:
1)  laptops have processors soldered to the motherboard.  You don't "upgrade" the processor, without replacing the mainboard.  The mainboard is at least 50% of the cost of whole new laptop.
2)  i5 would be an Intel processor.  There are no processors today that would be worth upgrading to AND manufactured by Intel.  Intel is in deep doo-doo because AMD is now dominating the market in every category, including single-threaded performance (which has been AMD's only minor weakness, until recently)

most laptops can not be upgraded -- what you buy now is what you get

We don't know as YOU haven't told us the brand and model of motherboard that your laptop has.
